White Oak Pastures is our 150-year-old family farm in Southwest Georgia. We are fiercely proud of our vertically integrated system, which allows us to raise animals on pasture, slaughter and butcher them in our on-farm abattoir, and ship them directly to the well informed consumers who want to support this type of agriculture. This is done from our 2500-acre farm.

What other farm can offer consumers delicious meats and poultry, hand-sewn leather jewelry, home-made pet treats, and tallow candles and soap, and other artisan goods? On what other farm can you visit to learn about whole carcass utilization or zero-waste management, or spend a night in an on-farm cabin, or have a true farm to table meal in the on-farm restaurant? Our guess is not many.

With this vertically integrated, holistic system, we believe our farm is one-of-a kind. We created the online store to share White Oak Pastures products with consumers who are not close enough to shop in our on-farm store. Shipping perishable product through the mail is expensive, but most consumers who care about animal welfare and sustainable farm practices seem to be willing to pay to have our meats and poultry shipped to their homes.

In 2005, we shipped only a few order online. We believe this is due to having a website not well designed for selling products, but also not having appropriate shipping materials and methods. We have used the rock wool insulated coolers, which unfortunately resulted in several instances of spoiled packages. Today, we ship hundreds packages weekly through the mail, all because we invested in a better infrastructure and packing materials. Just the cooler and box all orders ship in costs more than $10. This does not even account for the FedEx shipping charge.

We have also noticed some of our online competitors do not charge for shipping. While this seems convenient at checkout, there is no such thing as free shipping. These farms build the shipping and packaging costs into the product price. We have a large following of customers who pick up orders from our markets or farm store. It doesn't seem fair to penalize these customers with inflated prices, just so we can get product to more distant customers cheaply. We hope that you will give our online store a chance, and try the 10 species that we pasture-raise and hand-butcher.

-What shipping provider do you use?

We ship via FedEx.

-What if some of the items I want to purchase are out of stock?

We are proud of making use of every part of every animal that we slaughter. Whether it's making compost from bones or jewelry from leather, we respect the sacrifice that took place to get these delicious meats to our customers. This whole carcass butchery keeps us from mass producing any one item. While some view this as inconvenient, it is something we take great pride in. We promise that all items will be restocked, as we are committed to keeping items as available as possible, but keep in mind--we are farmers, who take great pride in natural production systems and regenerative agriculture. Seasonality and weather take part in the way we farm, which effects what items we have available from time to time.  If you find an item that is out of stock, please add it to your watchlist. When we add more inventory to this particular item, you will receive an email reminder that this item is now available.

-How does shipping work?

White Oak Pastures is doing our best to offer equalized shipping. At this point, this is how we handle the cost of all Ground Shipments:

$1-$299= $39.95

$300-$399= $49.95

$400-$499= $59.95

$500-$599= $69.95

$600-$699= $79.95

$700 and higher= $89.95

-When can I expect my order?

We are a small farm--We don't have elaborate warehouse or a high-tech inventory system. All orders are packed on our farm, not in some order fufillment center in the middle of the country. Our vertical integration keeps all functions at White Oak Pastures, where we raise, slaughter, butcher, package all of the species we offer to our customers. Due to the perishable nature of our product, we only ship on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  This ensures that all products will be received prior to the weekend.  Products that we do not have in stock at the time your order is placed will need to be cut fresh. It is possible that there may be up to a 7-10 day lag time from the time your order is placed to the time it is shipped. However, we work hard at making sure that orders are shipped as quickly as possible. If there is a concern about receiving an order on a specific date, we suggest calling our office to make arrangements.

-How is my order kept cold during the shipping process?

Each box shipped from our farm contains a Styrofoam cooler, packed with dry ice to keep it cold. We have shipped with the Eco-Friendly Rock Wool Recyclable Coolers in the past, but had unsuccessful results. We found that many orders would thaw and spoil in transit. While Styrofoam isn't recyclable, we rarely have meat spoil in transit. We hope that you can hold onto the cooler, and take the delicious meat and poultry your purchased from our farm on a nice picnic!

-Will my order be shipped frozen?

Most of our products are frozen prior to being shipped.  This ensures a safe temperature of the meat when it arrives at your home.  If a product is ordered that is not frozen prior to shipping, for an expedited order for example, it will be chilled as much as possible before being packed.  Most of our products will freeze to some degree during the shipping process due to the dry ice.

-How long will my package be in transit?

We will only allow a package to be in transit for three consecutive business days.  Keep in mind that we are shipping from our farm in the Southeast corner of the United States. If your order can not be received within 3 days using Ground shipping, our website will not allow you to choose Ground as the shipping option.  If you are given the option for Ground, it will get there within 3 days of shipping.  If you are not given the Ground option, you must use 2Day Air service or Overnight Service.  If you have any concerns regarding shipping, please contact our office for additional details.

-How will I know when my order has shipped?

We are farmers, not eCommerce experts, but we have learned a lot about shipping perishable products through the mail. We believe that communication is the key to success.  With that being said, you will receive a confirmation email when you place your order. We will also notify you when your order has shipped and send you a FedEx tracking number to use to track your package.

 -Where can you ship?

We ship throughout the 48 contiguous states, to any address that FedEx will deliver.

-What if my order is partially thawed upon receipt?

It is possible that a portion of your order may not arrive completely frozen, especially when the weather is very warm.  We suggest consuming any beef within 7 days and any poultry within 3 days.  If any of your order is warm to the touch, we suggest discarding that portion and giving us a call.  However, we take food safety and shipping our products very seriously.  We take as many measures as possible to ensure your order arrives in a safe condition.

-Do I have to sign for my package?

No, your package will be left at your destination address with no signature necessary. Once it's dropped off at the address you provided, it will be your responsibility.

-Can you ship a side or whole beef?

At this time we are unable to offer shipping for a side or whole beef order. All custom side and whole beef orders must be picked up at White Oak Pastures or at one of our market locations (Columbus, Ga, Atlanta, Ga, Albany, Ga, Dothan, Al, Auburn, Al).

-How do I maximize my shipping charge?

Shipping perishable products through the mail is expensive, and we are always looking for ways to make it more economical. White Oak Pastures ships all online orders through the mail, which must be done with a cooler. In order to maximize your shipping charge, you should focus on ordering larger quantities on a less frequent basis.

-Can product be returned?

Once meat leaves our farm, we are not able to accept returns. When dealing with perishable product, ensuring that the cold chain was never broken is required. When it leaves our hands, we are unable to guarantee that the product is safe for resell.

-Can I return my shipping cooler?

Unfortunately, food safety rules and regulations will not allow us to reuse the shipping coolers. Please hold onto those, and take the delicious meat and poultry you purchased on a picnic!
