We do not sell grassfed beef, lamb and pastured poultry and pork for a living. We run our farm and our abattoirs in a regenerative way for a living.

 

We spend our days on this farm doing the right things for our land, and for our herds and flocks. We are focused on constantly improving our land stewardship and our animal herdsmanship, and humanely turning our animals into high quality beef, lamb, poultry and pork.

 

The result of these efforts is meat that our customers can feel good about eating. Our system produces high quality animal protein that is produced without cruelty, or pollution, or waste. When you buy our products from us, you help to fund our environmentally-sustainable production system, focused on animal welfare. As Wendell Berry says, “consumers vote with their dollars on how they want the world to be.”


Grassfed Beef

 

Our grass-fed beef is processed in our own USDA-inspected on-farm beef abattoir. There are only two such facilities in the country. Calves are born on our farm, to mothers who were born here, from grandmothers who were born here. We do not take shortcuts. No grain, hormone implants, or antibiotics are given to our cattle. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used on our land.

Grassfed Lamb

 

Our grassfed lamb is from our Katahdin Sheep herd. These are hair sheep that are bred to produce high quality meat but no wool. This makes them suited for our semitropical environment. Our sheep follow our cattle through our pastures in a Serengeti Plains Rotational Grazing System. Large ruminants [cattle] are followed through the pastures by small ruminants [sheep] who are followed through the pastures by our poultry [chickens and turkeys].  This is unquestionably the best land management system for our farm. It humanely results in lamb that is superb.


Pastured Poultry

 

Our pastured poultry is completely unconfined in our pastures. They range freely all day, scratching, pecking and dust bathing in our pastures. They can choose to come into a mobile house to perch at night. They are effectively guarded from predators by our seven Great Pyrenees guardian dogs. The poultry, like our cattle and lambs, are slaughtered here in our on-farm USDA-inspected poultry abattoir. It is one of the of the very few in the country. Our chickens are our own proprietary heritage breed. We call them "T-Rex Reds," because the atavistic behavior of these red chickens reminds us of Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaurs. Our turkeys are American Standard Bronze, which is also a heritage breed. We also raise Guinea Hens, Ducks and Geese on pasture.

 


Pastured Eggs

 

In 2011 we had 116 hens that laid eggs, mostly for ourselves and the employees here at the farm. Back then we'd often say "there’s absolutely no comparison to store-bought eggs." And there still isn't any comparison between the freshness of our eggs and those that come from factory farms with enclosed permanent housing. We firmly believe that animals should have unencumbered access to sunshine and fresh pasture and fresh water.  We currently have 7,000 heritage-cross breeds of laying hens that supply us with fresh brown eggs every day. Our eggs can be found in the 8 Whole Foods in Atlanta, as we run a truck up each week to deliver our farm fresh eggs.

 

As with all the other species we raise on the farm, our laying hens are free-ranging on certified organic pasture. The mobile coops where they sleep and lay eggs mean more work for our employees compared to farms with permanent housing. But we think it’s worth the effort. And by not using artificial light and climate control, we see dips in production during the colder and hotter months of the year. But we know it’s worth the cost. We believe that embracing the seasonal rhythms of nature is part of holistic husbandry. We allow for natural molting instead of forcing a simultaneous molt (a common practice where farmers will withhold feed, water, and light in order to commence molting all at once in a flock). Furthermore, our laying hens work in partnership with the other medium and large ruminants on the farm in what's known as the Serengeti Grazing Model. This model not only builds fertility in the pasture, but also offers the greatest health benefits to the hens while ensuring optimal nutrition within the eggs we sell. Our hens receive a specially blended feed which uses no animal byproducts. Beyond that, the hens receive lots of vegetable scraps from our four-acre certified organic vegetable garden. We follow protocols for Certified Humane and Animal Welfare Approved eggs and have submitted applications for both certifications.

 



Pastured Hogs

 

Our heritage breed hogs freely roam our wooded pastures. Our hogs are a natural and important part of our grazing model, which helps us establish better shaded woods for our other species of animals. Our hog root and wallow as hogs instinctively love. Our Hogs are Certified Humane, Animal Welfare Approved and a Step 5 in the Global Animal Partnership. Interested in ordering a Half Hog, or Whole? Pastured Rabbits


After being weaned from their mothers, our rabbits spend their lives on pasture at White Oak Pastures. Our rabbits are in moveable tractors, which are moved to a new piece of pasture regularly. They graze our farm, furthering our Serengeti Grazing Model.

 


Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

 

Sign-up for our Community Supported Agriculture program is first-come, first-served. There are a limited number of memberships available, so be sure to submit the application form with payment as soon as possible to secure your spot.

 

The White Oak Pastures Organic Farm 2015 CSA membership program will provide for:
